Are Canister Vacuums Right For You?
What kind of vacuuming do you do? Carpets mostly? Or do you have a lot of bare wood type hard surfaces with dust bunnies galore a gathering?
If you answered yes to most of those sounds like canister vacuum cleaners are right down your alley. This type excels at hard-surface cleaning.
They're easier to maneuver too. And you're not pushing around a bulky upright with attachments only adding to the load. No, with canister vacuums you've got your wand and hose and the trailing canister to capture the dirt, dust and debris.
Plus canister vacs are are more stable on stairs too. Being lightweight and all. Also means they're easier to schlep up the stairs to the second floor. Taken to extreme you can even find backpack models if you wish.
Usually however they are more expensive than an upright. And quite as convenient as a handy hand held.
Still there are some little things that are spiffy according to most any reviews you care to read.
Like a retractable cord. No wrapping the cord around the unit when you're done. : Rather a touch of the button with your toe and the cord disappears in a flash.
Many find the accessories and other attachments work best at the end of a hose. Easier. And canisters are better suited for reaching under furniture.
Now some reviews mention they may be harder to store however. What with being more horizontal than vertical and upright.
Another point. Those models that come equipped with filter bags will let you gather in more dirt than bagless ones. Although some prefer the convenience of bagless cleaning. While most with allergies prefer HEPA filtration.
Here's a must have however. Canister vacuums intended for use on carpet work best if they come with a motorized beater bar. To help persuade the pile to give up any embedded debris that has started to settle in deep within the fiber. Without one you'll find more work is required. You'll have to pass over the same swatch of carpet many more times to achieve something close to the soil removal a beater brush gives you.
Of course most brands offer upscale machines just like with uprights. But only you can decide if the added bells and whistles are worth the bigger sticker price.
