What You Should Know Before
Buying the Miele Callisto?

Is the Miele Callisto really a quality no frill vacuum?

If you're looking for a well built vacuum cleaner that doesn't have a lot of bells and whistles then the Miele Callisto may be the vac for you.

Miele vacuums have a strong reputation within the industry. But if you're more or less looking for your basic cleaner then the their S5 series Callisto may make sense for your situation. This model has none of the fancy stuff found on the Capricorn and Aquarian models. You simply get a vacuum and power nozzle to work with.

But there's more to this model than that. So let's take a closer look to see if it's the model for you.

Product: Miele S5280 Callisto canister cleaner

Claim to fame: This is one of the least expensive models in the Miele line up of vacuums. It still comes equipped with the extremely powerful 1200 watt vortex motor making it great for medium to high pile carpeting. Yet like all Miele's is extremely quiet due to their silence isolation technology built into the machine. With its 29.5 foot radius it makes vacuuming even larger areas a snap. And of course with its HEPA filters it cleans the air too making life easier for those with allergies.

Pros:
Armed with an electric power brush and the brush duster, the Callisto does a thorough cleaning job. Accessing every nook and cranny and even sucking up the dust off cables and wires in your entertainment center. This power brush swivels easily and does a thorough job of dirt removal on carpets. Similarly the parquet wide brush makes short work of dust and debris on hardwood floors. If you want deep suction then you want to consider the 13 3/8 power brush.

Like most Miele's the one's light weight and quick on it's feet coming in at just 13.5 pounds.

You can easily adjust the rotary dial to increase or decrease the amount of suction power as you glide from clearing carpeting to tile floors. Yet unlike some models which can suck the life out of oriental rugs, the Callisto is a more gentle cleaning too.

Maneuvering is very easy due to its simple wheel design. And with its adjustable hose length and cord you have incredible vacuuming range.

Odors are trapped surprisingly well because of the extra filter and carbon in the HPEA filter. This also means you aren't simply recirculating the dust because of the active filter and sealed dust bag design. Which at nearly five quarts gives you plenty of room for dirt, dust and sand. Such capacity insures you won't need to replace the bags frequently.

Cons:
The manual is kinda sparse when it comes to operation. Leaving it to you to discover its features somewhat by trial and error.

There is no onboard tool storage which can be inconvenient. Not only do you have to have a place to store them you will also have to drag the parquet floor brush and brush head wherever you go.

Some will find the lack of finger tip controls on the handle annoying as it makes for quite a lot of bending to change settings.

Others complain the power symbols are not very intuitive. Perhaps so. Meaning you will have to figure then out for gs yourself by reading the instructions. Same goes for the mechanical bag full indicator. To get an accurate reading you need to understand the indicator full instructions thoroughly.

Bottom line: If you do not have much open carpet space and can do without the fancy accessories and finger tip controls then this model is likely suitable. Being a Miele, you will probably not regret spending money on this model regardless. Callisto being of durable stock it is apt to give you 10 years of reliable vacuuming.
